Join us for Birdability’s Virtual Book Club!
Birdability is thrilled to continue the Birdability Book Club. Birdability is dedicated to making birding and bird activities more accessible for everyone, especially individuals with disabilities. The Birdability Book Club is an extension of this commitment, providing a welcoming space for participants to connect, share experiences, and explore the world of birds through the lens of literature. The book club will meet every other month on the 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. Eastern Time/6:00 P.M. Central Time/5:00 P.M. Mountain Time/4:00 P.M. Pacific Time. In late 2025 and all of 2026, here are the dates Birdability Book Club will be held, and the books that we will discuss:
November 19, 2025 - The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year by Margaret Renkl
Here’s what we’ll be reading together in 2026:
January 21, 2026 - Owls of the Eastern Ice by Jonathan C. Slaght
An unforgettable journey through the remote forests of Russia in search of the elusive Blakiston’s Fish Owl, with a dose of meditation on wildness, persistence, and listening to the land
March 18, 2026 - Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert by Sunaura Taylor
A profound exploration of disability, ecology, and justice that challenges how we understand interdependence, resilience, and care, offering lessons from the Sonoran Desert about what it means to live in a wounded world (or body).
May 20, 2026 - The Social Lives of Birds: Flocks, Communes, and Families by Joan Strassmann
An illuminating look at the rich social complexity of birds and what their lives can teach us about cooperation, communication, and community.
July 15, 2026 - Vulture: The Private Life of an Unloved Bird by Katie Fallon
A love letter to a misunderstood species that reveals the beauty, intelligence, and ecological importance of vultures and challenges us to rethink what we value in nature.
September 16, 2026 - Turning to Birds: The Power and Beauty of Noticing by Lili Taylor
Actor and birder Lili Taylor invites readers into her practice of paying attention, finding meaning in observation, and the transformation that comes from slowing down with birds.
November 18, 2026 - Birdsong by the Seasons: A Year of Listening to Birds by Donald Kroodsma
A lyrical guide to a year of sound that is a celebration of the voices that fill our days and a reminder that listening is its own form of belonging. This book was chosen so readers can follow along month by month throughout the year, exploring Kroodsma’s journey of attentive listening individually, and then gather together in November to share reflections from a year spent tuning in to the songs that surround us.
Join us for conversation, reflection, and community throughout the year as we read together, learn together, and continue building a more inclusive world for every birder, every body, and every mind.
How to Join: Participation in the Birdability Book Club is open to all, and attendance is virtual, making it accessible to birders from diverse locations and backgrounds. To join the club, register for the upcoming session here. You will receive an email with the log-in information for the Zoom virtual meeting.
